Frequently Asked Questions
Below are some of the questions most frequently asked by new participants to my Bellydance classes:-
What is Belly Dancing?
Imagine Belly Dancing as an umbrella, with Oriental Dancing underneath (Egyptian, Lebanese, Turkish styles) or “Raqs Sharqi” in Arabic, and a vast variety of folkloric dances from Middle Eastern countries.
What do I wear?
Something comfortable, e-g comfortable top with leggings or jogging pants, NO jeans as this is an exercise class. If you want to dress up for the fun of it, wear a circular skirt and a scarf to tie around your hips.
Do I have to show my belly?
No, not at all. It’s entirely personal choice and up to each participant.
I have no dance experience at all, does it matter?
It doesn’t matter. Belly Dancing is about having fun and enjoying dancing to music. You will learn some fun, dynamic and easy to follow routines. My classes are non competitive, we are supportive. Remember we’ve all been there, and attended our first Belly Dance class.
Am I too old? Am I too fat?
No and no. The age of the Belly Dancers in my classes ranges from 16 to 65 year old. My students are all shapes and sizes. You don’t have to lose weight to do belly dancing. Use your curves, don’t lose them! I’ve enjoyed Belly Dancing from day one, because it was the only dance class which gave me the chance to become a dancer and just be me.
I’m pregnant, can I participate?
As with any new exercise routine, participants should discuss with their General Practitioner before hand, but otherwise pregnant women are more than welcome to attend.
What are the health benefits of doing Belly Dancing?
I have dropped 3 dress sizes because Belly Dancing has transformed my body shape.…I was a big girl! You will strengthen your core muscles, improve your posture, your balance and your flexibility, (never thought you could reach that top shelf!?). Walking tall and feeling confident, your self-esteem will be boosted. Some of my students have improved their sleeping and reduced their stress level. Most participants have noticed considerable pain relief in their back and their joints.
I’m a man; can I join your Belly Dance classes?
Yes of course, if you genuinely want to learn this dance form. Appropriate behaviour is of course requested in my classes.
Is there a minimum age to join your classes?
The required minimum age is 16 years old.
Can you give private tuition?
Yes private tuition is also available. The session will be tailor made to your needs and specific requirements. It’s available for anyone who wants to improve their technique level and develop their own style.
I would like to do a surprise for my guests, what kind of event can you be booked for?
Clients book me to perform at their Wedding, Birthday parties, Corporate Events and Charity Events. I am also available for Hen parties where we can have some fun together; these will include an hour’s tuition.
Please note: I do not perform at Stag Parties.
